Thursday prep roundup: Grady clinches third seed

GRADY — Grady’s boys used a fast start and a strong finish to upend Logan on Thursday night and clinch the No. 3 seed in next week’s District 4-1A tournament.

Junior Isaiah Mitchell scored 24 points — hitting 16 free throws in a row after missing his first attempt — and senior Chisum Rush added 21 points while playing through an early thumb injury as the Bronchos (12-10, 4-4 district) outlasted visiting Logan 83-80 in overtime.

Sophomore Dustin Bryant scored 17 points and junior Chad Beccera had 11 for Grady, which led 14-2 early and had a five-point lead in the final minute of regulation before Logan rallied to force the OT. Meantime, Mitchell went 10-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, helping the Broncho erase an eight-point deficit, and 4-for-4 in the extra session.

Juniors Dante Sanchez (19 points), Garrett Bollinger (16) and Wyatt Wright (14) led the way for the Longhorns (13-12, 4-4).

In other area boys games on Thursday:

Melrose 63, Fort Sumner 43 — The top-ranked, two-time defending Class 1A state champion Buffaloes (23-1, 7-0) wrapped up the District 4-1A regular-season crown by turning back the second-place Foxes (14-11, 5-3) at Fort Sumner.

Senior Tristan Sena led Melrose with 15 points, while senior Dylan Valentine and junior Tate Sorgen followed with 14 apiece. Fort Sumner was led by nine points from junior Chance Drake.

Dora 88, Lake Arthur 46 — Senior Joe Urioste scored 22 points as the Coyotes made short work of the winless host Panthers in District 4-1A.

Sophomore Cache Skelley added 16 points and senior Haiden Padgett 15 for Dora (11-12, 5-4). Lake Arthur (0-14, 0-9) got 23 points from junior Adrian Guillen and 15 from junior Armando Rey.

Tatum 53, Floyd 29 — The District 4-1A champion Coyotes (18-7, 9-1) pulled away in the final quarter, outscoirng the Broncos 20-9.

No one reached double figures for either team. Senior Sebastian Jimenez led Tatum with nine points, while senior Cobe Correa had seven for Floyd (4-18, 3-7).

In Thursday’s area girls games:

Gruver 65, Farwell 26 — The third-ranked Lady Greyhounds (29-2) broke away after leading just 11-10 at the quarter against the Lady Blue in a Texas Class 2A Region I area-round playoff game at Panhandle H.S.

Sophomore Bailey Maupin scored 21 points and senior Maddie McCloy added 15 for Gruver. Farwell (23-11) was led by nine points from freshman Charlie Trimble.

Melrose 41, Fort Sumner 36 — The Lady Buffs locked up the No. 2 seed in next week’s District 6-1A tournament, outscoring the host Vixens 14-9 in the second quarter and holding on from there.

Senior Nataley Mondragon and junior Hailey Martin each scored 12 points for Melrose (20-4, 5-2), with Martin going 10-for-12 from the foul line. Fort Sumner (18-8, 4-4) was led by 12 points from sophomore Jordan Wilton.

Tatum 51, Floyd 35 — The Lady Broncos played the host Lady Coyotes tough into the fourth quarter before Tatum was able to open some distance in District 4-1A.

Junior Ashlyn Griffin scored 12 points, including 10-of-14 free throws, and freshman Kylie West added 11 for Tatum (9-1, 17-8), which assured itself at least a share of the district’s regular-season title. Meantime, senior Anahi Chavez took game honors with 20 points for Floyd (6-15, 4-6).

Dora 51, Lake Arthur 7 — The Lady Coyotes had an easy time with the overmatched Lady Panthers, cruising behind 18 points from senior Randi Crandall. Also, freshman Jenna Ramirez scored 11 points, senior Makayla Burnett 10 and senior Katelyn Kircher eight for Dora (8-13, 5-4).

For the Lady Panthers (0-14, 0-9), playing the third of four games in four nights to end the regular season, eighth-grader Kimberly Morales scored five points.

Logan 66, Grady 25 — Leading by just eight at halftime, the visiting Lady Longhorns put the game out of reach by outscoring Grady 27-3 in the third quarter to complete a perfect run through District 6-1A.

Sophomore Kyndall Ragland scored 17 points and senior Karli Webb 12 for Logan (22-3, 8-0). Juniors Bailey Montoya and Kristin Grau led the Lady Bronchos (6-16, 0-8) with nine and seven points, respectively.
