LUBBOCK — Mercy Rotich went the distance both days of her final Lone Star Conference indoor meet, claiming a pair of golds during the LSC championships held at Texas Tech.
The Eastern New Mexico University senior repeated as the 3,000-meter champ by more than 10 seconds Saturday, posting a time of 10:12.25 for her second medal stand in as many days. Also earning points for the ENMU women in the event were Animala Kenyawani (10:35.04, sixth) and Evaline Cheptoo (10:35.08, eighth).
A day earlier, Rotich finished the 5,000-meter in a conference-record 17:16.52 to take the gold, while Kenyawani was fourth with a personal record 18:13.77.
The Greyhounds also got a medalist in the women’s 800, with junior Neri Gertaide crossing the finish line in 2:16.85. Fellow ENMU junior Malethabo Seema was third at 2:17.2.
Senior Ivar Moinat took fourth in the men’s 800, finishing at 1:52.16. He was two-100ths of a second out of third and .34 seconds out of first.
In other finals events featuring ENMU athletes:
• Maijah Mathis was eighth in the 60-meter at 7.86.
• Jesse Madrid was seventh in the men’s 3,000 at 8:52.59.
• The women’s 1,600 relay team of Mathis, Caroline Bachman, Getraide and Seema finished fourth at 3:58.37.
• Clovis native Jon Fuetes was eighth in the mile at 4:26.2.
• Friday saw Jessica Campbell placed seventh in the pentathlon, including a second-place finish in the high jump at 1.6 meters. Ryan Cox was eighth in the heptathlon and posted the top high jump measurement at 1.9 meters.
n The women’s distance medley relay team took eighth on Friday in 13:30.26, with relay members including Bachman, Kayla Sisneros, Mason Swanson and Marta Pascoa.
The Division II indoor championships are set for March 13-14 in Birmingham, Alabama.
