CHS tennis squads open at Goddard

Boys take fourth, girls fifth at eight-team invites

ROSWELL — Whenever bracket play is involved, sometimes when you win is just as important as who you end up beating.

The Clovis boys went 1-2 and finished fourth in the Goddard Invitational, while the Wildcat girls were 2-1 and took fifth in the eight-team field.

The Wildcat boys cruised by Alamogordo 8-1 in the first round, then fell 7-2 to New Mexico Military Institute and 8-1 to St. Michael’s.

Clovis boys coach Brad Heath was happy with the finish in the eight-team tournament, and felt the team got solid early play from its newcomers — junior Jack Curry and freshmen David Case and Gerald Gonzales.

Returning players excelled in doubles, Heath said, particularly in No. 1 doubles with David and Brandon Heath and in No. 2 doubles with Grant Palla and Cade Jones.

The Clovis girls also faced Alamogordo in the opening round, but fell 8-1. They won both of their consolation bracket matchups, edging NMMI 5-4 before blanking Roswell High 8-0 in the fifth-place matchup.

Coach Jeannette Albin said younger varsity players played key roles, as freshman Niliyaah Hall had the clinching win against NMMI while first-year player and sophomore Charlese Phillips won her singles match and teamed up with Hall for a doubles win.

Albin also credited some of the more veteran Wildcats, including juniors Brittney Albin, Andrea Mendoza and Alex Gonzales along with sophomore Ayia Alsaleh.

Clovis resumes the season Friday at Lovington.
