Elena Flores said Costa Rica is the most beautiful place she's seen.

Elena Flores is a part-time instructor at Eastern New Mexico University, teaching methods and curriculum in physical education and other introductions to health and wellness.

Flores obtained a master's degree in 2011. She is a single mother to a 13-year-old son, whose father passed away unexpectedly when he was just 4.

Flores also teaches yoga and works part-time as a waitress in Clovis.

What is the greatest struggle you've overcome?

As a single mom, dealing with the loss of my son's father. Raising a child and being present for him, dealing with life and school. Anxiety and PTSD that overcomes me, overcoming the mind.

Your proudest accomplishment?

Being a mom, seeing how good my son is as a person. Taking risks and leaps of faith while not being worried about what other people think and teaching him that along the way.

Tell me a personal goal.

To be able to give back to people. Financially, gifts, helping underserved communities and families, being able to give back in some way.

Most beautiful place you've seen?

Costa Rica, on a yoga teacher training retreat.

We stayed in huts in the forest. It is amazing to see the animals just as part of the culture as the people are.

The food was vegetarian sourced from the jungle. Three weeks with no meat, no caffeine, no alcohol, very limited phone and wifi, no distractions, just yourself.

It forces you to look at your life, what you like and what you want to fix, how are you going to fix things.

Favorite hobby?

Working out.

Favorite book you've read?

"The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz.

The biggest change you wish to see in the world?

For humans to see other humans as humans. Social justice.

I'm going to school for my Ph.D. in Depth Psychology and Somatic studies. Somatic means the body, depth focuses on the spirit. I'm researching how social justice lives in the body. How we think and feel versus people different from us.
