Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Several expected to sign with colleges today

A pair of area athletes could sign today with Division-I football programs, and several others are looking at Division-II and junior college teams.

The signing period for all college football programs begins today for the 2020-21 school year. Athletes are not bound to any program until they sign a letter-of-intent, and any commitments made in advance are verbal only.

Bryce Cabledue of Clovis is one of three expected signees for the Wildcats, and he has verbally committed to Kansas. Portales senior Philip Blidi has verbally committed to Texas Tech, but did receive a scholarship offer from Kansas last week.

Clovis High students will be honored at a ceremony set for 10 a.m. at Hamilton Ford. The event was moved due to the district canceling classes Wednesday for weather concerns.

Malik Phillips, who leaves Clovis with every significant receiving record, will head to New Mexico Military Institute. He also considered offers from Southeastern Oklahoma State, Navarro College, and Eastern New Mexico.

Fellow Wildcat receiver and defensive back Ethan Culiver has also verbally committed to NMMI.

Portales High students will be honored in a 1 p.m. ceremony at the Portales High School Library.

Running back Wromiah Gbassagee verbally committed to Eastern New Mexico over the weekend, but has numerous other offers.

Receiver Jalen Allen has verbally committed to Western New Mexico University, but does have offers from Eastern New Mexico, NMMI, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Sul Ross State, Tabor College, Arizona Christian and McPherson College.

Linebacker Justin Paden also committed to ENMU Tuesday morning, with offers also from NMMI, WNMU and OPSU.

Receiver Kellan Hightower has indicated previously he hopes to play college basketball and is not expected to sign, but he does have offers from ENMU, WNMU, and NMMI.

Eastern New Mexico coach Kelley Lee anticipates between 40 and 50 signings today.

Football won’t be the only sport with a local signing, however, as Chisum Rush will have a 10 a.m. ceremony at Grady High School. The senior is planning to pitch for Luna Community College in Las Vegas, N.M.
