Chaps seventh-graders claim three straight

The Yucca seventh-grade boys basketball team entered its final tournament of the season on a hot streak, with wins in its last three games.

The Chaps won at Marshall 30-25 Jan. 23, topped Gattis at home 29-28 Monday and topped Texico Tuesday 44-16.

Johnny Saiz and Angel Diaz both had eight points for team honors against Marshall. Cole Cabeldue had 10 to lead the Chaps against Gattis. Jayden Cox was the leading scorer against Texico with 11.

Yucca had outscored its opponents 580-443 entering the tournament.

Yucca seventh-grade girls go 4-1 to end year

The Yucca seventh-grade girls team went 4-1 over the week, with two early wins before a weekend tournament at Portales.

The Chaps started the week by beating Gattis 28-15 Monday and Texico 28-12 Tuesday. The Chaps finished third overall, going 2-1 with a 29-21 win over Gattis, a 32-16 loss to Texico and a 20-17 win over Marshall. The team finished 13-6 on the season.
