Friday prep roundup: May leads Melrose

DEXTER — Melrose senior Shannon May put the Lady Buffs on her back and carried them on Friday night.

May poured in a personal-best 31 points, and the Class 1A second-ranked Lady Buffs pulled away to a 54-36 win over Class 3A Dexter.

Melrose (15-3) opened a 10-point halftime lead with a 16-7 surge in the second quarter and never looked back. Senior Anayee Carlos led the Lady Demons (15-5) with 14 points.

In other girls clashes on Friday:

Dora 39, Floyd 29 — The host Lady Coyotes erased a two-point deficit by outscoring Floyd 14-2 in the final quarter in District 6-1A.

Senior Katelyn Kirchner led a balanced attack for Dora (6-11, 2-2 district) with 13 points, followed by seniors Randi Crandall with 12 and Makayla Burnett with nine. For the Lady Bronchos (4-12, 2-2), senior Anahi Chavez scored nine points and freshman Catelyn Breshears netted eight.

Farwell 64, Bovina 27 — In Texas District 3-2A action, junior Presley Agee had four 3-pointers and 24 points as the Lady Blue (22-8, 5-1) made short work of the Fillies, bolting to an 18-4 lead after one stanza.

Senior Ainsley Actkinson had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Farwell, her second double-double of the week . Ireyoi Vela led the way for Bovina with nine points.

In boys matchups on Friday:

Farwell 61, Bovina 20 — Leading 24-10 at halftime, the Steers used six 3-pointers to outscore Bovina 20-0 in District 3-2A action at Farwell. Sophomore Grayson Waldrop had four 3-pointers and was the only player in double figures for Farwell (18-9, 2-2), but six others contributed to the team’s 13 3-pointers — 10 of which came in the second half.

For Bovina, Danny Munoz scored seven points.

Dora 74, Floyd 32 — The host Coyotes also posted a 20-0 edge in the third quarter to lead by 43 points.

Sophomore Cache Skelley led Dora (9-9, 3-1) with 19 points while brothers Alex and Joe Urioste added 14 and 12 points, respectively, and senior Haiden Padgett collected nine. Three players — juniors Eli Terry, Juan Alba-Beltran and Trace East — each finished with eight points for the Broncos (2-14, 1-3).

Melrose 57, Dexter 22 — The Class 1A top-ranked Buffaloes overwhelmed Dexter as juniors Tate Sorgen (17), Trace Jackson (13) and Devin Bailey (12) combined for 42 points. Already leading by 19, Melrose outscored the Demons 20-2 in the third stanza.

Senior Omar Lopez and freshman Josh Duran topped Dexter (3-17) with six points apiece.
