Weather results in local closings

The cold snap that hit eastern New Mexico on Tuesday should continue into Wednesday night, and area residents can expect cold nights for the foreseeable future.

Tuesday saw a light snowfall in the area and temperatures were expected to dip to a low of 11 degrees.

Due to the weather:

• Portales closed its Portales Area Transit system for the day late Tuesday morning and announced it would be on a two-hour delay Wednesday.

• Eastern New Mexico University closed its campus late Tuesday morning as well.

• District and magistrate courts in Clovis and Portales closed at noon.

• Muleshoe planned to release students early Tuesday afternoon.

• Clovis Community College announced it would close at 3 p.m. Tuesday. CCC also rescheduled its board of trustees meeting from Wednesday to Feb. 12.

• Clovis school officials canceled all after-school and evening activities planned for Tuesday, but said there were no plans to release students early. "At this time, the district has been assured that the weather conditions will not hinder bus transportation of students," a school news release stated. Late Tuesday afternoon, Clovis school officials announced classes would be canceled Wednesday so workers could clear parking lots and help ensure safety.

• Roosevelt County announced it would close offices and send non-essential personnel home at 1 p.m. "We will also be operating on a two-hour delay (on Wednesday morning) as county offices will open at 10 a.m.," County Manager Amber Hamilton wrote in a news release.

• Curry County announced it would close offices at 3 p.m. Tuesday and open Wednesday at 9 a.m.

• The city of Clovis cancelled its Civil Aviation Board meeting that was set for Tuesday night. It's been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday in the conference room at the airport terminal.

The National Weather Service predicts snow is less likely for Wednesday, with a 20% chance before noon. Wednesday should be partly sunny with a high around 32, but a 10-15 mph north wind could make it feel colder.

Temperatures are expected to rebound starting Thursday with clear skies and highs in the 50s through Friday. Overnight lows will be in the 20s.

Saturday and Sunday should be sunny, with highs in the 50s and 60s and low 30s overnight, according to NWS.
