1970: Curry County commissioners announced a new arena and 2,170-seat grandstand would be constructed at the county fairgrounds.
Commission Chairman Mack Hendershot said the facilities would be built with the cooperation of the Curry County Mounted Patrol, which would also help with funding.
The arena was projected to cost about $25,000. The grandstand was expected to cost about $115,000.
D. Smith Day, a fair board member and one of the chief proponents of the project, said the grandstand, arena and accompanying restrooms would be available to any group that wanted to use them.
The arena was in use later that summer.
