Volcano Vista tops Clovis girls

ALBUQUERQUE — After missing the previous two games, coach Jeff Reed was back on the sideline for Clovis High’s girls on Friday night, one week after undergoing an appendectomy.

The long bus ride and Volcano Vista’s domination of the Lady Wildcats didn’t make him feel any better.

The young-but-talented Lady Hawks rolled to a 23-point halftime lead and cruised to a 63-37 victory over the Lady Cats, who were slated to be back at The Rock on Saturday night to host Lovington.

“Volcano Vista’s good,” Reed said. “We did OK against their halfcourt defense. The first quarter, we had some chances to score and didn’t convert. Then they started pressing us, and turnovers killed us.”

Reed said for the first time in 23 years as a coach, he didn’t wear a suit on the sidelines, instead opting for a sweat suit to try to stay comfortable.

Volcano, ranked fifth in Class 5A, rode a balanced attack to the win, led by junior guard Giannah Aragon with four of the team’s nine 3-pointers and 16 points. Sophomore guards Natalia Chavez and Kennedy Brown added 15 and 13, respectively, with Chavez knocking down a pair of 3s.

“They’re going to be good for two more years, because most of their best players are sophomores,” Reed said.

Both teams went deep into their benches during a relatively even second half. Reed said Volcano Vista backed off its pressure during that time.

“We kept playing; we didn’t quit,” he said. “But if you don’t handle the pressure, it doesn’t really matter what you do.”

Senior guard Aydan Everett had two of Clovis’ three treys and finished with 12 points, while junior center Hanna Nussbaumer added 10 points.
