Prep roundup: Sudan no match for Lady Blue

FARWELL — The Farwell Lady Blue held Sudan to 12 first-half points and went on to a 43-37 District 3-2A victory over the Hornettes on Friday night.

Senior Karson Barnes led a balanced attack for Farwell (19-7, 3-0 district) with 11 points, followed by junior Presley Agee and freshman Charlie Trimble with 10 apiece. Agee converted a 3-point play with about three minutes left to give the Lady Blue control again after the Hornettes (15-4, 1-1) had cut a 12-point halftime deficit to four.

Freshman Stevi Lockhart scored 10 of her 19 points in the final quarter to lead Sudan’s comeback attempt.

Meantime, the Farwell boys opened district play with a 47-33 win over Sudan, led by juniors Jonathan Mora (17 points) and Jose Rodriguez (14). Similar to the Lady Blue, the Steers (16-7 overall) cruised into halftime with a 26-15 lead and stayed in control the rest of the way.

Sophomore Michael Limon scored 12 points for the Hornets, while senior Parker Battin added 11. The Buffaloes (13-1) were slated to meet Maxwell in Saturday’s boys final, while the Lady Buffs (11-2) took on Mountainair for the girls title.

In other area games on Friday:

Elida boys 77, Hondo 70 — Senior Tyce Delk scored 25 points and the Tigers (14-2) limited the host Eagles to just eight third-quarter points in building a bit of a cushion.

Sophomore Rylan Creighton added 18 points and junior Teagan Burton 11 for Elida. Hondo (10-4) was led by 24 points from sophomore Joseph Lucero, 14 from junior Tommy Lucero and 13 from sophomore Michael Candelaria.

Hondo 58, Elida girls 26 — The Lady Eagles got out to a 22-3 lead at the quarter and coasted even though they had no one in double figures. Senior Kyra Lucero was Hondo’s top scorer with nine points, but 10 of 11 players dented the scoring column for the Lady Eagles (7-6).

Juniors Maislyn Ferguson with 10 points and Raquel Rogers with nine led the way for the Lady Tigers (1-14).

Also on Friday, Melrose’s teams easily advanced to Saturday’s finals in the Mountaineer Invitational at Reserve, the boys routing Animas 83-28 while the girls trounced Cliff 57-30.

In area games on Thursday:

Melrose boys 71, Reserve 31 — Four players scored in double figures and the Buffaloes rolled to a 21-6 lead at the quarter against the host school in the Mountaineer Invitational.

Senior Tristan Sena led Melrose (with 15 points, followed by junior Trace Jackson (14), junior Devon Bailey (13) and senior Dylan Valentine (12). Senior Cade Livingston scored 11 points for the Mountaineers (5-10).

Melrose girls 60, Reserve 22 — The Lady Buffs also had no problem advancing, getting 13 points from senior Nataley Mondragon, 12 each from senior Shannon May and junior Hailey Martin and 10 from sophomore Johanna Roybal. Top scorers for the Lady Mountaineers (1-12) were sophomores Naomi DeLaO and Hailey Baca, each with six points.

Floyd girls 52, Elida 36 — The host Lady Broncos held Elida to one point in the first quarter and never looked back.

Freshman Catelyn Breshears and senior Anahi Chavez finished with 13 points each for Floyd (3-11), and junior Mariah Carrillo added 11. Meantime, the Lady Tigers got 14 points from junior Tiffany Ortega.

Elida boys 77, Floyd 50 — Four players reached double figures and the Tigers used big second and fourth quarters to subdue the Broncos.

Senior Tyce Delk and junior Teagan Burton scored 18 points apiece for Elida, followed by senior Colton Ferguson with 12 and sophomore Rylan Creighton with 11. Floyd (1-13) was led by cousins Eli and Eric Terry with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Also, Logan swept a doubleheader at Dora on Thursday, winning the boys contest 56-18 and the girls tilt 53-35. Senior Randi Crandall had 12 points for the Lady Coyotes.

Doubleheaders scheduled Thursday night sending Texico to Lovington and Grady to Roy/Mosquero were postponed due to weather.
