Clovis girls top Caprock on road

AMARILLO — It was anything but easy, but Clovis High girls assistant coach Candace Jordan managed to even her record for the weekend while filling in for the ailing Jeff Reed.

The Lady Wildcats shot a season-best 74 percent from the foul line (28-of-38), including 9-of-13 in overtime, to subdue Amarillo Caprock 55-48 on Saturday night.

Jordan coached the Lady Cats (6-10) for the second consecutive night after Reed went into the hospital on Friday for an appendectomy. Clovis dropped a 59-54 decision that night to Lubbock Trinity Christian at The Rock, but managed to set season scoring highs in both games.

“Free throws kept us in it,” Jordan said. “It was very, very, very, very physical, but the girls handled it real well.

“We normally shoot in the high 50s or low 60s (on free throws).”

Reed returned home Saturday and hoped to be back sometime early in the week, Jordan said. The Lady Cats’ next outing is on Friday at Volcano Vista.

Senior guard Annabelle Martinez scored 19 points before fouling out in the extra session, while senior guard Aydan Everett chipped in 13 for the Lady Cats. Meantime, senior guard Cierra Jenkins tied the game with a 3-pointer late in regulation and junior post Skyler Jordan netted five of her seven points in the OT, including 3-for-3 from the line and a 3-point play.

The game was back-and-forth pretty much the whole time, with neither side leading by more than two points at the end of any quarter. The Lady Cats’ biggest advantage prior to the OT was four points, Jordan said.

Leading scorers for the Lady Longhorns were junior guard Ashia Wright with 12 points and senior guard Tyanna Badillo with 11.
