Clovis girls swimmers take third at Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis’ swim team stormed ahead in its season this past weekend, competing at the Albuquerque Invite, with solid results.

Out of 26 teams, the Clovis girls were third, the boys ninth. And the girls showing came with head coach Gordy Westerberg switching around his relay lineups.

“You never want them to swim the same events over and over and over because they start to get stale,” Westerberg said.

So he mixed the girls 200 and 400 free relays. The results were positive, as the 200 free relay team of Bella Zamora, Katie Reeb, Hannah Luscombe and Jakoda Culley was third with a time of 1:49.4. And the 400 free relay team of Amber Westerberg, Shyann Kissinger, Nina Mead and Kiara Morgan was fifth with a time of 4:02.0.

“To get third and fifth, I was happy,” Coach Westerberg said.

The highest Clovis finish was posted by Kissinger, who was second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.5. She was also third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.2.

Amber Westerberg posted a new state-qualifying time of 5:38.3 in the 500 freestyle, and was third in that event.

The Lady Wildcats’ 200 medley relay team of Zamora, Luscombe, Mead and Kissinger was third with a 1:59.4 time.

Zamora was fourth in both the 200 freestyle (2:03.1) and 100 butterfly (1:04.8).

Luscombe was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.1) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:05.9).

On the boys side, Clovis’ 400 free relay team of William Longhenry, Clayton Hogan, David Reeb and Thomas Palla was seventh with a time of 3:46.8, less than three seconds away from a state-qualifier.

“So they’re inching closer and closer,” Coach Westerberg said.

David Reeb was 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.4.

Overall, it was a strong meet for Clovis.

“For the girls to be third and the boys to be ninth, I was really happy,” Coach Westerberg said.

Clovis has a club meet this weekend before returning to regular-meet competition at the Hobbs Invite on Jan. 25.
