Elida keeps rolling

Tigers improve to 10-1 heading into EPAC seeding.

ELIDA — Even the holiday break couldn’t slow down the Elida Tigers boys basketball team.

Playing for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Tigers blew out to a 19-3 lead after one quarter on Friday night and dismantled Class 3A Dexter 54-35.

Elida (10-1) heads into next week’s EPAC tournament with the best record in the 10-team field and thus could earn the No. 1 seed in the event, which begins on Wednesday at Melrose and wraps up on Saturday at Eastern New Mexico University’s Greyhound Arena in Portales.

Senior Tyce Delk scored 21 points for the Class 1A Tigers, while junior Teagan Burton added 14. Junior forward Tyler Brisco led the Demons (2-10) with 12 points.

In the girls contest, Dexter handed the Lady Tigers a 68-23 setback.

Fort Sumner 50, Dora boys 43 — Jacob Maxwell scored 19 points and Kane Burney added 10 as the Foxes turned back the Coyotes at Fort Sumner.

Dora (5-4) scored 21 points in the second period to open a two-point halftime lead, but the Foxes (4-6) held the Coyotes to 14 points over the final two stanzas.

Senior Austen Jones led Dora with nine points, while seniors Haiden Padgett and Hunter Jones chipped in eight apiece.

Fort Sumner 62, Dora girls 28 — The Vixens (7-3) took control by outscoring Dora 19-3 in the second period for a 21-point halftime lead.

Freshman Avery Cavett paced Fort Sumner with 15 points. Co-leaders in scoring for the Lady Coyotes (2-5) were Makayla Burnett and Randi Crandall, each with nine points.

Melrose boys 54, Maxwell 38 (Thursday) — Junior Trace Jackson scored a season-best 17 points, and the Buffaloes used a 24-8 run in the third quarter to erase a five-point halftime deficit.

Senior Tristan Sena added 13 points and junior Tate Sorgen 10 for Melrose (8-1). Seniors Kolten Riggs and Ben Goebel paced the Bears (5-3) with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

A scheduled girls game at Maxwell between Melrose and Des Moines was canceled. Lady Buffs coach Caleb King said he hopes to pick up another game as a replacement.
