Year in review: Portales broke ground on fire station in 2019

PORTALES — After working several years to secure funding, Portales finally broke ground on a new fire station in the northwest part of town in 2019.

La Casa originally donated the land to the city several years ago, but it took time to secure funding to finally make use of it.

Former fire chief Gary Nuckols was committed to getting the project off the ground before announcing his retirement in December and making way for Timothy J. Cathey to step in and take over as chief.

The new station is on the north side of the train tracks running through town and city officials have said it will go a long way in cutting down response time and increasing safety for the area.

The $1.7 million construction project was awarded to WRCC, Inc and funding was secured through the state fire protection fund, New Mexico Finance Authority loans and grants and money from the city's general fund.

City officials expect the station to be open and ready to use by Spring 2020.

“The city has been in need of this for years and years,” said Portales Mayor Ronald Jackson. “It's finally come to fruition. We can get this substation built with the manpower and equipment to man it. We have a great staff and a great fire department that knows what they're doing.”
