Ram girls take fifth at Capital City Invitational

December 11, 2019

SANTA FE — Any coach would hope his team improves as the season goes.

For at least the first weekend of the season, Portales High girls coach Wade Fraze said the Lady Rams accomplished that.

PHS finished its Capital City Invitational slate on Saturday with a 54-38 victory over Los Alamos to earn fifth place in the eight-team event.

“It was our most complete game of the tournament,” Fraze said. “Hopefully, we’re getting better. The first game (a loss to Espanola Valley) was ugly, and our second game was better.”

The Lady Rams (2-1) led Los Alamos 12-9 at the quarter and extended the margin to 21 points by the end of the third period.

Sophomore guards Taris Rippee and Riley Shillings scored 12 points each for Portales, which put nine players into the scoring column. Sophomore guard Teagan Faust collected 21 points, 14 steals, 13 rebounds and seven assists over the three games to earn all-tournament honors.

For the Hilltoppers (1-3), 6-foot-1 senior forward Natalie Gallegos finished with 13 points, but Fraze said the Lady Rams were able to contain what he thought was Los Alamos’ top player, 6-footer Rebecca Green, holding her to five points.

Portales plays for the first time this season at the RAC with 5:30 p.m. tipoffs against West Las Vegas on Tuesday and Las Vegas Robertson on Friday.
