News release: Xcel warns of scammers

Here is a Dec. 4, 2019, news release from Xcel Energy:

We’ve has several reports from our New Mexico service area of customers receiving calls from scammers representing themselves as Xcel Energy customer agents. The scammers are threatening disconnection of service if the customer doesn’t provide a credit or debit card payment over the phone.

We want to remind customers that if they are behind on payments, they will receive a disconnect notice in the mail first and that we provide several options for making payments.

Customers receiving suspicious calls should hang up and contact Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999 to verify the status of their accounts.

Customers can also download the free customer app or sign up for My Account at http://www.xcelenergy.com to check their account balances and make electronic payments securely.
