Melrose, Texico dominate all-state volleyball squads

ALBUQUERQUE — Melrose and Logan dominated Class 1A volleyball all season, so it’s not a shocker they followed suit with the all-state volleyball team.

The Buffs and Longhorns took nine of the 10 first-team spots and 11 spots overall, with selections released this week by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

A total of 16 players from Curry and Roosevelt counties were honored, including five from Class 2A champion Texico.

Melrose had six first-team selections following a 23-1 season — Brette DeVaney and Deajha Downey at outside hitters, Nataley Mondragon and Hailey Martin at middle hitter, Pyper Belcher at setter and Isabelle Sena at libero.

The Longhorns, who upset Melrose to win their third-straight title, had Karli Webb at outside hitter, Jordan Hines at middle hitter and Julianna Garcia at libero.

Taylor Graham of Tatum crashed the Melrose-Logan party with a first-team nod at setter.

Johanna Roybal received a second-team slot at setter. Floyd had a pair of second-team selections with Anahi Chavez at outside hitter and Adalee Alvarez at libero. Randi Crandall of Dora was a second-team selection at middle hitter.

Texico, which won its sixth-straight crown, had five first-teamers and one second-teamer. First-team selections were Ashley Hill and Riley Rohrbach at outside hitter, Gemma Martin at middle hitter and Sydnee Muse at libero. Rachel Phipps was a second-team selection at setter.

Kylyie Paden was a second-team selection on the 4A team at middle hitter.
