Clovis puts 18 on district football team

CLOVIS — The Clovis High football team’s 2019 season, which featured a District 2/5-6A championship, a 5-0 regular-season home record, and a spot in the 6A semifinals, has since earned even more rewards.

When the all-district honorees were announced, 18 Wildcats were named, starting right at the top with Cal Fullerton getting selected as the district’s coach of the year.

Fullerton and his staff guided a turnaround from last year’s 4-7 record to this season’s 8-4 state semifinalist showing.

Senior receiver Malik Phillips was named All-District Offensive Player of the Year after hauling in 78 receptions for 1,147 yards and 17 touchdowns through the Wildcats’ 12 games this year.

La Cueva linebacker Noah Woisin, ranked No. 1 at his position in New Mexico, was named All-District Defensive Player of the Year.

Of the many Clovis players who contributed to the team’s success, seven were named All-District first-team: seniors Malik Phillips, Bryce Cabeldue (offensive line), Ethan Culiver (strong safety), and Brandon Mason (cornerback); and juniors Jeston Webskowski (running back), Jaden Phillips (defensive end) and Chance Harris (quarterback).

Clovis also had seven second-team selections: seniors Ivan Hamilton (defensive end), AJ Silva (linebacker) and Logan Flores (defensive line); and juniors Johnny Jimenez (offensive line), Kaleb Young (defensive line), Ethan Padilla (center) and Braiden Romero (cornerback).

Wildcats senior quarterback Devin Gillespie and junior outside linebackers Ernesto Acuna and Pacer Hill were honorable mentions. Gillespie was 3-0 as a starter in October when he had to replace the injured Harris.
