Police seeking suspect in shooting

CLOVIS — A 28-year-old man is dead and police are searching for his alleged killer after a shooting Friday night.

Clovis police said William Romero, 28, was found dead when they responded to a shots-fired call about 10:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Eighth Street.

Police said they are looking for Steven Hogues, 34, charged with an open count of murder in connection with Romero’s death.

According to a CPD news release:

• Officers were dispatched to the scene after shots were fired. Soon after, dispatchers received a call about a man being shot.

• When officers arrived to the residence steps, they encountered a male with no sign of life. The man was identified as Romero.

The region’s Major Crimes Unit was activated to investigate the incident, police said.

It’s the second homicide reported in Clovis in two weeks.

On Nov. 7, police said Jahmall Burge was found shot to death in a home on North Lea Street. Johnny Rae Vigil was arrested the next day and charged with murder in connection with Burge’s slaying.

Court records show Hogues has been the subject of criminal allegations dating to 1999, ranging from drug possession to vehicle theft and assault.

A bench warrant was issued Tuesday after Hogues failed to appear in court on a charge of driving while license suspended in late September.

That warrant lists Hogues as a resident of Albuquerque.
