UTPB sweeps Greyhounds

ODESSA, Texas — Texas-Permian Basin took control late in the second set and went on to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 Lone Star Conference volleyball sweep over Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday.

The Greyhounds (4-21, 2-15 LSC) was slated to finish out its season on Saturday night with a conference match against Western New Mexico at Silver City.

ENMU led the Falcons 8-5 in the opening canto, but UTPB (19-7, 11-6) mounted an 11-1 run and were able to close it out.

The Hounds opened a 15-12 lead in Game 2 before Permian Basin countered by running off 13 of the game’s final 14 tallies. Then the Falcons put together an early 5-0 run in the third set, and ENMU was unable to get back in it.

Freshman setter Qitana Sapiga collected a double-double for ENMU with 14 assists and 13 digs, while junior outside hitter Jasmine Gannon added 10 kills and just three errors on 23 attacks.

Sophomore libero M’Lee Vinson had a match-high 18 digs for ENMU while sophomore Rae Sapiga, Qitana’s sister, had 10 assists to reach double figures in that category for the 10th-straight match.
