County alcohol questions pass in Curry, Roosevelt

Curry and Roosevelt will be dry counties no more, and there will be a new trustee at Clovis Community College according to results from Tuesday’s general election.

All results are considered unofficial until they are canvassed by their respective county boards next week.

The final two dry counties in the state both passed three similar questions on alcohol in the unincorporated parts of their counties.

A question on allowing the sale, service and consumption of alcohol passed 1,614-947 in Curry County and 654-568 In Roosevelt County. A question on allowing the transfer of liquor licenses to the unincorporated parts of the county passed 1,453-1,019 in Curry County and 592-576 In Roosevelt County. A final question about beer and wine licenses for restaurants passed 1,691-864 in Curry County and 700-526 In Roosevelt County.

Realtor Carolyn Spence defeated incumbent Raymond Mondragon for the Clovis Community College District 4 position 353-312.

In Roosevelt County, voters approved a mill levy for Portales Municipal Schools to provide the school with $400,000 for technology measures. Superintendent Johnnie Cain said the mills will be phased in while an existing technology bond is phased out, keeping tax rates the same and allowing the district to receive the same money without being on the hook for bond interest.

Grady had one contested school board race, with Gerald Garland defeating Kodie Weese 64-28. Voters also overwhelmingly approved continuing a bond issue to provide the school with $400,000 for still-undetermined uses. The bond measure passed 84-9.

Three races were contested for the Texico school board, with Derek Kyle Cain winning Position 1, Chad Davis taking Position 2 and Craig Rohrbach winning Position 3.
