Kenyawani named LSC's top newcomer

RICHARDSON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s Aminata Kenyawani and Evaline Cheptoo were accorded All-Lone Star Conference honors on Monday after top-10 finishes in the LSC women’s conference race two days earlier at Silver City.

Kenyawani, a junior from Tucson, Ariz., was also ENMU’s second consecutive women’s LSC Newcomer of the year after posting a time of 23 minutes, 1.54 seconds and placing sixth in Saturday’s six-kilometer race.

Cheptoo, a senior from Kapkatetm, Kenya, placed ninth in 23:14.58. She was last year’s Newcomer of the Year winner.

All five ENMU scoring runners finished in the top 30 of Saturday’s meet. Lubbock Christian took team honors in the 16-team field with 64 points to 85 for West Texas A&M and 90 for the Hounds.

The top 15 runners in men’s and women’s competition were accorded All-LSC honors. LCU’s Leigh Cordes was named women’s Coach of the Year, while WT’s Daphne Pate earned Freshman of the Year honors.

WT captured its seventh consecutive men’s team title with 39 points, followed by LCU (86) and Cameron (97), while ENMU finished 13th with 358 points.

WT’s Jake Krolick earned his third consecutive men’s Coach of the Year honor, while the men’s Newcomer of the Year award went to WT’s Ezekiel Kipchirchir and Freshman of the Year to LCU’s Patrick Chemoimet.

ENMU’s next outing will be on Nov. 9 in South Central Region competition at Canyon, Texas.
