Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met at the club building Oct. 9 with 28 members and 5 guests present. Following the luncheon, Sheryl Borden, President, called the meeting to order. The pledges and collect were lead by Beverly Bennett and Mary Lou Rowley gave the invocation.

June Ferguson, ,embership co-chair, conducted the initiation to welcome three new members: Ester Ancira, Bennett and Leslie Creighton. Edwina Gower, co-chair, gave information on the membership contest being conducted this year.

Wanda Pettus, program co-chair, introduced Curt Jaynes, owner of GardenSource Nursery who talked about preparing the lawn, shrubs and flowers for the up-coming cooler weather. He gave plants as door prizes.

The minutes from the Sept. 11 meetig were approved and the treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.

Ferguson told about the Shoebox project and invited those interested in helping to take a special shoe box and fill it with items for children. Boxes can be taken to The Print Shop, Butterfly Floral or to Ferguson and the deadline is Nov. 10.

House chair Melody Pierson reported on upgrades to the club building. A report was given on the District III Convention and the 2019-2020 Proposed budget was approved. A committee consisting of Ferguson, Quaylene Parkey, Joann Rackler, Erinn Burch, Mary Mendoza and Alisa Boswell-Gore, was selected to review the club building use contract and will report in November.

Cindy Miller, Civic Chair, reminded members about the Peanut Valley Festival and passed around a volunteer signup sheet. Burch reported on the Goodie Bags for the military. Miller also asked for volunteers to serve Meals on Wheels for November.

Betsy Chavez, chair of the Hostess committee, introduced others serving with her: Ester Ancira, Doncella Caywood, Jan Smartnick, Deena White and Debbie Hill.

The next meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Nov. 13. Kaye Green, RGH Administrator, will present the program.
