Greyhounds fall out of AFCA poll after loss

PORTALES — Three Lone Star Conference football teams jumped up in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, two teams also received votes and a fifth school fell out of the receiving votes category.

The latter was Eastern New Mexico University, following its 45-27 loss Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce.

A total of five Lone Star Conference schools are included in the poll released Monday morning. It is the first poll released following Lone Star Conference play.

Tarleton State jumped up one spot to No. 3 and grabbed one of the poll’s 33 first-place votes following a 58-28 win over West Texas A&M that included a 51-0 halftime lead.

Texas A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State also jumped up one spot each, and are now ranked 11th and 15th, respectively.

Angelo State received its first votes of the season, grabbing 15 points in the “Others Receiving Votes” category following its 44-7 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville. West Texas A&M dropped from 31 points to six following the Tarleton setback.

The Greyhounds were for the previous two weeks included in the receiving votes category, with one point Sept. 9 and five points Sept. 16.
