Mustangs outlast Wildcats

LUBBOCK - Clovis pieced together two strong touchdown drives in the first half but lost the ball twice on the way to more points Friday and those sputters allowed Lubbock Coronado to pull out a 27-16 victory in a game halted late in the third quarter by several lightning strikes.

Chance Harris got the Wildcats (3-2) on the scoreboard on their initial series of the game when he rolled away from pressure and whipped a 34-yard touchdown pass to Blake Muscato.

Clovis converted a two-point conversion out of the swinging gate to go up 8-0.

Coronado (2-2) answered with a field goal and a go-ahead touchdown, but the Wildcats regained the edge when Jeston Webskowski reached the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

The Mustangs went back in front with a touchdown pass from Sawyer Robertson to Cory Ferriera. Clovis went marching for a go-ahead score and got as deep as the Coronado 2-yard-line. But Harris lost a fumble and Coronado ran out the first-half clock.

Between a Mustang field goal and touchdown in the third quarter, Harris threw an interception to Javien Weatherly and his 24-yard return gave the Mustangs a short field. They cased in on Kaleb Manuel's 3-yard blast with 3:03 on the clock and the game was halted at that point.

Texas rules require a 30-minute delay whenever lighting is detected. The scoreboard clock at Lowrey Field restarted four times before the game was called.

Webskowski led the Clovis offense with 87 rushing yards on 14 attempts. Harris passed for only 103 yards after torching Lubbock Monterey for 439 passing yards and six touchdown passes the week before.

The Wildcats head back to the Lubbock area next week when they play at Lubbock-Cooper at 8 p.m. CDT Friday.
