PORTALES — At least one person thinks Eastern New Mexico University is the No. 25 football team in Division II. Fortunately for the Greyhounds, that person is one of 32 people who cast ballots for American Football Coaches Association poll.
The Greyhounds received one point in the poll, released Monday by the AFCA. The Green and Silver are one of five Lone Star Conference squads appearing in the first poll of the regular season. Tarleton State is ranked fourth, Texas A&M-Commerce 12th, Midwestern State 16th. West Texas A&M received 13 points to be the ninth team in the “Others Receiving Votes” category.
Valdosta State retained its preseason No. 1 ranking, receiving 31 of the 32 first-place votes. Rounding out the top five are Ferris State, Minnesota State, Notre Dame (Ohio) and the Texans.
Northwest Missouri State, seventh in the poll, received the remaining first-place vote.
The Greyhounds face six of the teams in the poll this season, and certainly have a chance to move in the poll the next two Saturdays. They’re at Colorado Mesa (12 points) Saturday and visit Texas A&M-Commerce Sept. 21.
