Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Letter to the editor - Aug. 11

Turning away refugees an appalling choice

I am responding to last Sunday’s letter calling into question whether or not Portales is a welcoming community for people who are in dire need.

I am appalled to find out that this community turned refugees away.

How could we turn our backs on men, women and children who are in such desperate need?

I am so sickened by the political atmosphere of this Trump nightmare that I don’t follow the news. It literally made me ill to see so much hatred and cruelty being tolerated in our own country. But to find out that my own town turned away people in such a fragile state makes me sick to my core.

Please, let’s stand up to the cruel politics that has hardened the hearts of normally good people. We have to detox from the politics of hate and be true Americans. We are New Mexicans who do not have stones for hearts.

It’s time to remember who we are and, not only remember, but act from the tenderness that would never allow a human being to be treated with brutality if they were in our presence; let us recognize our power to be good citizens and good neighbors and say “Enough!” to the politics of hate.

We are not haters. We are a warm and welcoming community.

Aren’t we?
