Clovis to host pair of Little League tourneys

With July 4 having come and gone, it’s time for the Little League state baseball and softball tournaments.

Some tournaments are underway, most begin this weekend, others don’t start until the weekend of July 19-21.

Locally, the 9-11 year-old Baseball and Junior Softball brackets feature a slate of games at Beachum Field and the Lady Wildcat Complex, respectively, beginning this weekend, as District 3 plays hosts for those tournaments.

In the 9-11 bracket Friday at 5:30 p.m., District 9 plays District 1, and at 7:30 p.m., District 5 (Altamont) takes on District 7 (Silver City).

Clovis takes the field at 3 p.m. on Saturday against the District 9/1 winner. At noon Saturday, District 2 (Artesia) plays District 6 (Shorthorn), with that winner playing the winner of Clovis’ game on Sunday at 6 p.m. District 4 (Taos) plays District 8 Saturday at 9 a.m., with the winner of that game playing the Altamont/Silver City winner on Sunday at 3 p.m.

At the Junior Softball level, action begins noon Friday when Zia Little League (District 5) plays National (District 6) at the Lady Wildcat Complex. The winner faces Roosevelt County (District 3) on Friday at 6 p.m., and the winner of that game plays either La Plaza (District 4) or Copper (District 7) on Saturday at noon.

Also this weekend, the 8/10 baseball tournament is being hosted by District 5 at that district’s Little League Complex in Albuquerque, with District 3 playing District 2 on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and the winner playing host District 5 on Saturday at 9 a.m. The senior softball tournament is being hosted by District 6 at the Bob Forrest Sports Complex in Carlsbad, opening with a District 4 vs. District 7 matchup Friday at 7 p.m.

And in Major Softball, also hosted by District 6 at Carlsbad’s Forrest Complex, District 3 Clovis plays District 6 National on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with the winner facing either Eastdale (District 8) or Pojoaque Valley (District 1) on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The loser’s brackets, obviously, are still to be determined.

The Junior and Major Baseball Tournaments, both hosted by District 6 at the Forrest Complex, begin the weekend of July 19-21.

The 8-10 Softball (hosted by District 7 in Bayard) and Senior Baseball Tournaments (hosted by District 5 in Albuquerque) are underway.
