A couple of changes coming to Portales Fireworks Show

June 30, 2019

We live in an independent, patriotic community and the best evidence is our annual Portales Fireworks Show.

The show is funded by businesses, families and individuals that are proud enough to step up and make it happen every year.

This year’s show has a couple of changes. We’ve dropped the music choreography in order to lengthen the show. We’ve also moved it back to a 9:30 p.m. start time to ensure a darker sky.

A commercial fireworks display is important to our community because it brings families and neighbors together for a short time. Not only that, when we pool our resources we get a better and safer show.

To keep it safe for everyone we all need to be extra careful during this holiday. We need you to be careful in the heat and we definitely don’t want you drinking and driving.

With the fireworks tragedy in Roswell fresh in our minds, we urge everyone to be very careful when handling fireworks. Supervise your kids and follow safe fireworks practices.

We also need your help in keeping our fireworks crews safe as they prepare for our show. The walking trail near the shoot site adjacent to the softball complex will be closed all day Thursday, July 4.

In past years, people have ignored the closure and used the path while crews were working. A cell phone or radio signal in the area potentially creates another disaster like the one in Roswell. Please observe this closure.

Finally, if you haven’t made your donation to the fund yet drop it off at the Chamber today or donate online at

Or you can find me at the south end of the softball complex parking lot. I’ll be the one playing patriotic music really loud.
