Roosevelt to consider an alcohol election resolution

PORTALES — Depending on the will of the voters in Roosevelt and Curry counties, the number of dry counties in New Mexico next year could go from two to zero.

About a week after Curry County had a similar resolution, the Roosevelt County Commission will consider a resolution calling for election to allow alcohol sales in the unincorporated parts of the county.

The meeting will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at the commission chambers of the Roosevelt County Courthouse.

In its Monday meeting, the Curry commission unanimously passed their version of the resolution, with commissioners noting they weren’t stating their views on alcohol sales in the county but instead leaving the question up to its residents.

Curry and Roosevelt are the only two counties in New Mexico that are dry. The dry status does not apply to cities within those counties that choose to offer alcohol sales.

Other items on the agenda include:

• A resolution designating polling places for the 2020 and 2021 statewide elections.

• Professional services contracts with Milnesand Volunteer Fire Department for fire services and Yucca Telecom for information technology services.

• Consideration of the closure of South Roosevelt Road 9 for one mile east from South Roosevelt Road N, and appointment of a road viewer committee.

• An executive session for five matters of threatened or pending litigation.
