Police: Minor injury suffered in standoff

CLOVIS — A four-hour standoff Tuesday in Clovis ended with one man hospitalized with minor injuries and for a mental health evaluation, police said.

Clovis police responded around 3 p.m. to a residence on the 1100 block of Calhoun Street following reports that a 35-year old man there had a military-style automatic weapon and was threatening self-harm.

More than three hours of negotiation followed, during which police blocked off 11th through 13th streets between Thornton and Hinkle streets.

Police Chief Doug Ford said nearby residents were evacuated for their safety.

Shortly after 7 p.m., police deployed a "chemical irritant," and the man was apprehended by a K9 unit after leaving through the back of the residence.

Ford said the man was hospitalized for evaluation and for minor injuries caused by the police dog during capture.

Ford said no one else was injured during the incident.

The scene was cleared just before 7:30 p.m.
