ENMU's Ankerman named LSC hitter of week

RICHARDSON, Texas - Eastern New Mexico second baseman Nicholas Ankerman, following his best series so far this season, was named the Lone Star Conference's hitter of the week.

Ankerman, a senior from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, is the first Greyhound player to be honored this baseball season with a weekly award. The regular season ends this week with the Greyhounds heading to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four-game series.

Ankerman went .571 over as the Greyhounds split their series with Tarleton State, and posted an on-base percentage of .667.

Thanks to four of his hit going for extra bases - a homer, a triple and two doubles - Ankerman also posted a slugging percentage of 1.071 while scoring a team-high eight runs and grabbing two RBIs.

For the season, Ankerman is fourth on the team with a .360 batting average, fifth in on-base percentage at .486 and second in slugging percentage at .515.

The Greyhounds open their final regular season series with a 5 p.m. Friday series opener, followed by a noon Saturday doubleheader and a noon Sunday series finale.

The Greyhounds need a combination of six wins and Tarleton State losses against UT Permian Basin to grab the LSC's final postseason tournament spot. Tarleton State, currently in sixth place in the conference standings, needs a combination of three wins or ENMU losses, but can leapfrog UT Permian Basin for the fifth seed with a series sweep.
