Health council holding workshop

April 24, 2019

CLOVIS — When it comes to substance abuse, there are countless ways to get addicted, from cigarettes to prescription pills to street narcotics.

There are also plenty of ways to recognize, recover and prevent addiction. The Curry County Health Council hopes to tackle some of those in a Saturday workshop at the county administrative complex.

The Substance Abuse Awareness Symposium is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the complex’s commission room, with presentations from various groups and individuals who have dealt with addiction, either personally or professionally.

This is the second year the council is doing such an activity, but last year’s inaugural run was titled as a workshop and County Health Council Coordinator Susan Alman said it wasn’t well attended.

This year, the symposium will be broadcast locally (channels 42 and 1,042 for Plateau subscribers).

“It’s a substance abuse awareness workshop, but we’re going to cover all of the addictions,” Alman said. “I think gambling and sex addictions are the only ones we don’t have.

“Opioids, of course, are a crisis everywhere, but the teen vaping has gone up as well.”

Presenters will include Teen Court, Christian Believers, Celebrate Recovery, Bethlehem Baptist Church, GLU Factory, the county DWI task force and Mental Health Resources.

“We’re going to have each of our presenters speak on a different subject,” Alman said, explaining that Teen Court would have success stories. “We’ll have everything from how to identify an addiction in yourself and others all the way up to a counseling and support system.”

Alman is aiming for at least 10 different vendors at the symposium as well.
