Ram romp pushes streak to five games

April 10, 2019

After winning its first home game last Thursday, Portales’ softball team kept its momentum rolling throughout the weekend, winning four more in a row to make it a five-game win streak in all.

The Lady Rams’ weekend romp had them winning two each against Ruidoso and Dexter by a combined four-game score of 60-5. Ouch — at least for the Rams’ opponents.

Portales swept Friday’s home twinbill against Ruidoso 16-1 and 17-0 before moving on to play Saturday at Dexter, where the Rams swept 17-0 and 10-4.

In the first game, Ruidoso actually took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. And after the bottom of the first, the game was tied 1-1, still anyone’s to win.

But by the end of the second inning, Ruidoso was probably nostalgic for those sanguine, innocent first-inning days when the outcome was actually in doubt, because Portales rang up 10 runs to take an 11-1 advantage.

The Lady Rams then scored five more in the bottom of the third to secure the win in three innings.

Nicole Laurenz — who had clubbed a homer against Clovis just a night earlier — supplied a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored for Portales in Friday’s opener.

Aymri Chavez added two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Rams. Marijlee Ruiz had two RBIs and a run scored; Wendy Baeza had two RBIs; Mia Molina had an RBI and three runs scored; and Adri Garcia contributed an RBI and two runs scored.

Baeza pitched the three innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight and walking just one.

Friday’s second game went even better for Portales, as the Lady Rams jumped out quickly by scoring six in the first inning, followed by 11 in the second. This one was also in three innings.

Jeuliece Chavez led the way in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Vanessa Villanueva, Laurenz and Jade Gallegos had two RBIs each for Portales. Laurenz also had a double and two runs scored; Villanueva and Gallegos scored one run each.

Marisela Garcia added an RBI and three runs scored. Molina chipped in with an RBI and a run.

Baeza allowed just two hits while striking out seven and walking none.

After running its home record to 3-0 over the previous two nights, Portales went back on the road Saturday and walloped Dexter.

The Lady Rams won Saturday’s opener 17-0 in five innings, fueled by a homer from Aymri Chavez, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Laurenz was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Micaela Garcia was also 2-for-4 with a double, and she scored three runs.

Baeza drove in two runs to help her own cause. Abi Cameron, Ruiz, Teagan Faust and Jeuliece Chavez each had one RBI. Cameron and Faust scored three runs each; Ruiz scored once.

Baeza tossed all five innings, allowing just two hits while fanning six and walking none.

In Saturday’s finale, Portales jumped out to an 8-0 lead after 5 1/2 innings and went on for the six-run victory in the only game of the two days that lasted all seven innings.

Cameron had four RBIs for the Lady Rams (9-5). Villanueva and Marisela Garcia each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jeuliece Chavez drove in a run. Micaela Garcia scored twice.

Baeza (9-5) went all seven innings, striking out 10 and walking two while scattering six hits. In the four games total, she had 31 strikeouts against just three walks, while allowing 13 hits.

Portales now has some time off and will return to action on Apr. 16 with a road doubleheader against Artesia, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
