Roosevelt County crews knocked out a grassfire Wednesday between Portales and Floyd, with estimates of 1,000 acres burned.

People near the fire are encouraged to evacuate while hot spots are watched. South Roosevelt Road 6 (S.R.R. 6) west of S.R.R. W and Y between NM 267 and S.R.R. 6 are still closed due to fire and electric danger.

Both First Baptist Church and the Portales Memorial Building have been activated as shelters.

The fire started on private property, according to NMFireinfo.com. The site confirms four structures have been lost to the blaze and one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
