Cleanup day set for Saturday

CLOVIS — Saturday will be as good a day as any to start your spring cleaning as the city of Clovis will host its twice-annual trash cleanup day.

The Great American Cleanup will begin registration at 7:30 a.m. at the Parks and Recreation Department building and route assignments will be distributed at 8 a.m., said Assistant City Clerk Vicki Reyes.

Reyes said teams will be sent to pick up trash along U.S. 60/84, Llano Estacado, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and other spots around town.

Reyes said as of Monday there were few signups for the event, though Cannon Air Force Base and Clovis schools typically send a large number of representatives.

“We have a lot of kids that come out and they come out and are excited because they get free T-shirts and pizza and then they do the cleanup and come back and tell us about all the gross stuff they found,” Reyes said. “I think the kids have more fun than they realize they’re going to.”

Participants will be treated to a pizza party beginning around noon back at the Parks and Recreation Department and first-, second- and third-place awards will be given based on the number of trash bags collected, with a trophy and candy going to the winners.

In addition to Saturday’s event, Reyes said there will be no fees at the landfill from noon Friday to noon Monday and residential tire dumping will be allowed with a limit of nine per family.
