Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

A chance to give back

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month. Here are some opportunities, as suggested by United Way of Eastern New Mexico:

Come build food boxes with us

Agency: Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico

The Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico's food assistance program serves up to 90 clients a day. We are in need of volunteers who can help assemble food boxes for these clients.

Ideal volunteers should be able to lift about 40 pounds and walk very short distances. If you can help, we'd be happy to have you.

Building boxes for the day takes about one or two hours. The times needed are: Monday through Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Donate your grocery bags

Agency: Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico

Did you know that we can re-use your clean and unripped grocery bags? We use them to bag produce and other food items. Drop them off at the Food Bank any time on Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

Help bag apples

Agency: Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico

We have a lot of apples in cases that need bagged. Every month we bag produce for more than 900 families. If you can help, you'd be the apple of our eye.

Hours are: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Red Shoe Crew Run

Agency: Ronald McDonald House Charities

A collective annual run open to runners, virtual runners, cyclists, motorcyclists, and classic car enthusiasts. We call it Run for the House.

Whether you run, walk, ride, or drive, whether you live in our area or run in yours, please join us in celebrating the Ronald McDonald House Charities and their 31 years of service to families in need.

This event is geared to raise $42,000 in efforts to provide sustainability, medical and residential care for sick families.

Register to run, ride or drive for just $25.

Each local registrant receives a T-shirt, run tag and medal. If you live in the area, join us from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for fun, family friendly entertainment, including bounce houses, human foosball, cornhole, lunch by McDonald's and various other vendors and live music by Seth Savage & Frank Ray.

All local runs will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, starting from various sponsored locations, including Wal-Mart, Harley Davidson, and Hillcrest Park, with stops set among our great community at various other sponsored locations.

Sponsor opportunities are available, as well as event booth space, if your business would like to be a part of this great event.

Donations for silent and live auction will be accepted. For questions and info, call:

Feeding our Portales familes

Agency: United Way of Eastern New Mexico

You can change lives by sorting food, bagging items and carrying them out to clients' vehicles with a big smile.

Participating with the food distribution program is a wonderful and easy way to connect to folks in Roosevelt County that we may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet.

Food distribution will occur at Central Christian Church in Portales this Saturday. This monthly event is a federal program with the United States Department of Agriculture, provided and delivered by the Food Bank of ENM.

United Way of ENM coordinates these distributions, managing to assist in getting food into the hands of about 250 Portales families every month.

Spanish speaking volunteers are always needed to help at the registration table.

Go to http://www.volunteerenm.org, select "Respond" and "Submit" to let us know you are coming.

Great American Clean Up

Agency: City Of Clovis

Let's keep Clovis beautiful by helping with the Great American Clean Up this Saturday.

Bring out your team and make a difference you can see.

Meet at 7:30 a.m. at Clovis Parks Department for team registration, T-shirts, route assignments, bags, etc.

At noon enjoy pizza and trophy presentation for the top performing teams.

It's the perfect event for families, groups, squadrons, scout troops, even Sunday school classes.

Gather data

Agency: United Way of Eastern New Mexico

Volunteer from our office or your home.

Every year United Way of Eastern New Mexico distributes a directory of fun, safe activities for kids called the Summer Activity Guide. It is free to parents and free to list activities.

In order to produce the most comprehensive guide, we must contact as many of the organizations, businesses, and churches in our area that offer events for kids in our area.

You can help. You can contact the organizations in our previous directory for updates to their info, using our Excel spreadsheet.
