Kingsville finishes off sweep of ENMU softball

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Playing the 11th-ranked team in the country probably isn’t the best way to snap out of a losing funk.

It sure wasn’t for the Eastern New Mexico softball team, which dropped the final game of a three-game series to No. 11 Texas A&M-Kingsville, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon, allowing the Javelinas to sweep the three-game series while dealing the Greyhounds their ninth straight defeat. The Hounds last tasted victory on March 2.

A&M-Kingsville’s bats were hot right out of the gate, producing a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Anastacia Leibas.

Following a Jennifer McElroy leadoff walk in the top of the second, Kayla Marshall pushed McElroy across home plate four batters later on an RBI single up the middle, cutting the Hounds’ deficit to 2-1.

However, Eastern could not cool down the Javelinas as they scored seven unanswered runs over the final four innings to pull away with the eight-run victory.

Kingsville tallied its nine runs on 14 hits without committing an error, while the Hounds scored their run on four hits and committed just one error.

Marshall, Emma Gary, Karina Moreno, and Parker Smith each tallied a hit for the Hounds, while Kimberly Herron took the loss in her start, giving up four earned runs on four hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

The Greyhounds hosted a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on Tuesday.
