Elida declares town sanctuary

ELIDA — The governing body of Elida on Wednesday adopted a resolution declaring itself a “second amendment sanctuary town.”

Approved by the town’s board of trustees and signed by mayor Durward Dixon, the resolution is “in support of the second amendment of the U.S. constitution and in support of Roosevelt County,” which made a similar gesture last month. It specifies the town “affirms its support of the Chief of Police (to) not enforce any unconstitutional firearms laws against citizens.”

County officials have maintained such resolutions are symbolic, as local governments cannot supersede state law, but Elida Mayor Durward Dixon said he was still thought it was “fantastic” to send a message and wondered why more municipalities hadn’t done the same.

“I’m just proud that our rural communities are listening to citizens and starting to stand up for our rights,” he told The News, noting the three board members present at Wednesday’s meeting had approved and seconded the resolution declaration before he could even finish reading it from the agenda.
