New Mexico lawmakers have rejected a proposal that would have repealed the state's anti-abortion law, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
The legislation, backed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, failed on an 18-24 vote after a brisk debate on the Senate floor.
House Bill 51 sought to repeal a law that makes it a crime to end a woman's pregnancy, except in certain circumstances. The statute is largely unenforceable now because of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade.
Every Republican voted against the bill, as did eight Democrats — Pete Campos of Las Vegas, Carlos Cisneros of Questa, Richard Martinez of Española, George Muñoz of Gallup, Senate President Pro Tem Mary Kay Papen of Las Cruces, Gabriel Ramos of Silver City, Clemente "Meme" Sanchez of Grants and John Arthur Smith of Deming.
Football has returned
The Eastern New Mexico University football team is holding a special practice at 6 p.m. March 22 at Clovis' Leon Williams Stadium.
The practice, a tune-up for the team's March 29 spring game at Greyhound Stadium, is free to attend. Throughout the practice, members of the team will hand out free hot dogs to fans.
The team will work on situational drills to help introduce some of the newer offensive and defensive players to the fans.
