Both the Clovis and Portales tennis teams were in action over the weekend, with Clovis traveling across the border and Portales heading to the Roswell Classic.

Portales’ girls finished second overall in the eight-team field with 39 points scored over nine different brackets — 10 points for first-place, seven for second, four for third and one for fourth in six singles and three doubles competitions.

Mikaela Garza claimed first place for Portales in No. 6 singles, and the girls got a pair of second-place finishes — Taryn Wood in No. 4 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Garza and Vanessa Lucero.

Goddard ran away with the girls competition, claiming first place in seven of the brackets for 81 points on the weekend.

Portales’ boys finished fourth with 21 points, with Tyler Underhill finished second in No. 5 singles competition. Three other Rams took third-place finishes.

New Mexico Military Institute won six brackets and scored 75 points for first place to top Cleveland (57) and Goddard (27).

Clovis competed in Levelland at the South Plains Christian Home Educators Association meet Friday, with Grant Palla and Karyssa Gonzales taking first-place finishes.

Palla, a sophomore, took the Division A3 boys singles bracket, while the senior Gonzales won the Division B1 girls singles bracket.

In the Division A1 boys singles, junior David Heath and senior Sumito Richeson played in the fifth-place match with Heath winning.

The girls team got a trio of third-place finishes from sophomore Andrea Mendoza in A1 singles, Niliyaah Hall in B2 singles and in A2 doubles with sophomore Alex Gonzales and freshman Ayia Alsaleh.

Coaches Brad Heath and Jeannette Albin said everybody played well overall in the event, noting about half a dozen were playing in their first tennis tournaments.

Clovis heads to Goddard for a non-conference match on Thursday. Portales makes its home debut Friday, hosting Moriarty in a 3 p.m. match at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Center.
