Court resolution on Roosevelt agenda

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Commission on Tuesday will consider a resolution giving counties the option to close their probate court and move those functions to magistrate or district court.

Currently the Roosevelt County Probate Court handles civil cases not exceeding $3,000.

According to the resolution, the Roosevelt County Probate Court received 101 filings from 2016 through 2018 while the probate judge earns a $20,024 salary with a $31,540 budget each year.

Senate Joint Resolution 8 would be subject to voter and New Mexico Supreme Court approval before the closure of the county’s probate court.

Also on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting:

n The meeting will include an executive session held to discuss limited personnel matters and threatened or pending litigation and will be followed by a workshop, according to the agenda.

n The board will hear a presentation on the fiscal year 2019 audit.
