Payless to close down stores

CLOVIS - Payless ShoeSource plans to close all of its 2,100 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico over the next few months, including Clovis' North Prince location.

The Topeka, Kansas-based Payless started liquidation sales Sunday, and said all stores will be open until at least the end of March while the majority will be open until May.

Staff at the Clovis Payless location at 3900 N. Prince St. said they were not allowed to talk to media, and referred inquiries to Payless Senior Communications Director Lauren Jeffords.

Jeffords' voicemail was not able to accept messages, but Jeffords has told other media outlets she did not have closing timelines to share regarding specific stores.

The move will not affect stores outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The chain has about 3,00 stores worldwide in more than 30 countries.

Founded in 1956 by cousins Louis and Shaol Pozez, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy two Aprils ago and closed hundreds of stores during its reorganization. It emerged from bankruptcy after four months with $435 million in debt eliminated.
