Roosevelt to consider firearms resolution

PORTALES — With an eye on Santa Fe and the current legislative session, the Roosevelt County Commission will consider a resolution opposing increased firearm regulations exceeding federal law during Tuesday’s meeting.

There have been several gun-related bills introduced in the Roundhouse during the session, with Senate Bill 8, a law introducing additional background checks before the transfer of firearm, passing the senate by a 22-20 vote on Thursday. House Bill 40 would require background checks at gun shows.

Sheriff Malin Parker expressed his opposition to the firearm regulation efforts at the commission’s previous meeting. Curry County passed a similar resolution at its Feb. 8 special meeting.

The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. in the county commission room at the Roosevelt County Courthouse, also includes a board of finance meeting, a road viewer committee report regarding a requested road closure and approval of the annual reporting for the Arch and Milnesand volunteer firefighters.
