February 3, 2019

RICHARDSON, Texas — West Texas A&M is the favorite to defend the Lone Star Conference baseball title, but voters in the LSC poll expect a challenge from Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Thursday poll, comprised of 18 voters from a pool of LSC coaches, sports information directors and media representatives, allotted 10 first-place votes to the Buffaloes and 117 total points. West Texas A&M was 40-14 overall last year with a 20-4 LSC record and hosted both the LSC and the South Central Regional Championships last season.

Eastern New Mexico University was selected to finish fifth with 51 points.

Texas A&M-Kingsville took six first-place votes and 106 points, while Angelo State received 94 points and the final two first-place tallies for third.

The poll was rounded out in fourth place by LSC tournament champion Tarleton State (76), ENMU, Cameron (34) and UT Permian Basin (26).

Angelo State's Nick Novak was named the preseason player of the year. The junior infielder hit .353 with 60 hits, stole 20 bases and had a .952 fielding percentage at shortstop.

The Buffaloes' Joe Corbett was chosen preseason pitcher of the year. He went 11-2 with a 3.05 ERA with 87 hits and 100 strikeouts. He led the LSC in victories, innings (97.1) and strikeouts.

The LSC schedule will consist of 40 games for each team — five home series and five road series of four games each. Games will normally be played with a nine-inning game Friday, a doubleheader of seven-inning games Saturday and a nine-inning game Sunday.

The LSC tournament will include the six teams with the best records in only the final seven series of the season. The No. 1 seed will host the LSC tournament May 9-11, with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes and the next four seeds playing each other on the opening day. The tournament winner will receive the LSC's automatic NCAA postseason bid.
