CLOVIS — In its first meeting since the New Mexico Legislature opened Tuesday morning, the Clovis city commission will take a stand on various pending legislation at its Thursday meeting.
Up for consideration at the 5:15 p.m. meeting at the Clovis-Carver Pubilc Library’s North Annex are requests to:
• Support a bill by Rep. Randy Crowder, R-Clovis, a former city commissioner, that would create a crime of making a terroristic threat.
• Oppose any restrictions on private firearm transactions exceeding federal law at gun shows, including the semi-annual Clovis Lions Club Gun and Knife Show.
The resolution argues any state restrictions would put the Lions Club show at a competitive disavantage with Texas shows, and notes the show generates nearly $30,000 annually for charitable organizations, scholarships and people in need through the area.
Other agenda items include:
• A 4:45 p.m. executive session preceding the meeting to discuss disposal or acquisition of property.
• Communication from Police Chief Doug Ford on the department’s accreditation.
• A request to negotiate terms of sale with Foote/Hyder for the Levine’s Building at 414 Main. Foote/Hyder was one of five interested buyers, and was scored highest by a request for proposal committee.
• A $40,556 agreement with ENGIE Services to provide electical upgrades for the HVAC system at city hall.
• A request to transfer a police unit to Clovis Community College’s security department. The 2008 Chevy Impala has been taken out of patrol rotation, and has mileage of 99,648 miles.
• A $3,000 budget transfer for asbestos inspection at the Lyceum Theatre.
• Reappointment of Vince Tyson and JD Gutierrez on the city’s economic incentive board, and an election to appoint either Jason Felty or Leo Lovett to the board’s banking/finance/accounting position.
