Curry County Association of Educational Retirees

CCAER met Tuesday at K-Bob’s Steakhouse. Our program featured our area legislators, who were each introduced by their respective adopt-a-legislators (AAL) as follows: Sen. Pat Woods, R-Broadview, introduced by Andrea Bigelow; Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, introduced by Pam Wallace; Rep. Randy Crowder, R-Clovis, introduced by George Boal and Martin Zamora, R-Clovis, introduced by Dianne Davis (not an AAL).

Each legislator spoke in turn, letting CCAER members know what was coming in the 60-day legislative session and what issues they supported (keeping the Permanent Fund as it is and not legalizing recreational marijuana, among others). Teachers were asked what were the most important issues facing teachers in the classroom today. Questions were taken from the floor.

We invite all retired Curry County educators and staff to join us at K-Bob’s at 11 a.m. for lunch 11:30 a.m. for the program. Our next meeting will be Feb. 5 when we will hear a presentation from Presbyterian Physical Therapy. Don't miss it!

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Wednesday with President Amber Hamilton presiding. June Ferguson led the pledges, collect and gave the invocation. There were 19 members and two guests present, Susan Moore and Kristin Beltran.

The minutes from the December meeting were approved as printed in the club newsletter and the treasurer’s report was filed for audit.

In recognition of the 116th anniversary of Portales Woman’s Club, Sheryl Borden and Gaynelle Thomas, past presidents, conducted the candle lighting ceremony.

Following the ceremony, members participated in a quiz about past presidents of the club. Winners were Jan Smartnick and June Ferguson.

President Hamilton thanked Alisa Boswell-Gore for implementing the holiday project for senior citizens on Meals on Wheels. Various announcements were made. Jacquelyn Houser chaired the Hostess Committee and thanked Wanda Pettus and Noelle Bartl for serving with her.

The meeting adjourned and the next meeting will be on February 13th.
