CLOVIS — Three Clovis seniors received Class 6A all-state football recognition this week, with Montez Wright receiving first-team designation from the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

Stephen Acosta and Jaylen Mason drew second-team honors on the squad, created by a vote of the classification’s head coaches. Other classifications are to be released later this week by the association.

Jaylen Mason was named to the Class 6A second-team defense by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. He led Clovis with 84 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

The team is created through a two-step process. First, each coach in the classification nominates players for the team. That pool of players is then put on a ballot for all coaches, who rank their top 10 athletes at each position. The top vote-getters in each spot receive a first-team nod, while the next-highest finishers receive second-team nods.

Wright was selected on the first-team defense as a defensive back. He had 28 tackles for the Wildcats, with a team-high five interceptions and two fumble recoveries to match sophomore Chance Harris for team honors.

Acosta was selected on the second-team offense at the offensive line position. He was part of an offensive line that helped the Wildcats rush for 1,858 yards.

Mason was selected as a second-team linebacker and defensive end. He led Clovis with 84 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

The Wildcats went 4-7, and were the 10th seed in Class 6A. They fell in the first round to No. 7 Las Cruces.

State champion La Cueva topped all teams with 11 selections, nine of them first-team. State runnerup Cleveland had nine selections, with six on the first team.
