Opinion: Dog park worth consideration

December 16, 2018

Geraldine Barber came by the Santa Rosa newspaper office recently to register a grievance — too many people are letting their dogs “do their business,” as they say, in other people’s yards.

She was particularly disturbed by a big pile of dog poop in a church yard near her home.

Such messes are the responsibility of the pet owner, though it’s hard to pick up after a canine running wild. Plus, we’ve heard concerns about packs of dogs that roam our town without restraint. We’ve even noticed occasional reports that someone was bitten by a dog, and that’s even more disturbing.

It’s been brought up before, and it’s worth consideration: A dog park.

Not only will our local dog owners in town appreciate and make use of it, so will people traveling through town, pooches in tow.

Dog parks are cropping up in cities and towns all over the country, and maybe our city needs to get on board. It would be one more reason to stop in Santa Rosa, relax for a while, and spend a few bucks.

Maybe it would also help clean up our neighborhood yards as well.
